Description Gerti Hesseling, who died in March 2009, was a legal anthropologist at the African Studies Centre (ASC) in Leiden, The Netherlands, for nearly thirty years. In September 2004, she stepped down as director of the ASC but remained attached to the Centre and continued to do research in legal anthropology until the time of her death. She was appointed Chair of the Netherlands Development Assistance Research Council (RAWOO) in 2003 by the Minister for Development Cooperation to advise the Dutch government on development-related research. She contined her research during this period, for example working on a project entitled 'The Mystery of Legal Failure? A Critical Comparative Examination of the Potential of Legislation of Land Assets in Developing Countries to Achieve Real Legal Certainty' in collaboration with Prof. J.M. Otto of Leiden University and Prof. A. Hoekema from the University of Amsterdam. In May 2006, she was appointed to the Koningsberger Chair at the Study and Information Centre for Human Rights (SIM), Utrecht University where she taught and did research on peace building and the rule of law. She gave her inaugural lecture entitled "Recht en vrede kussen elkaar" on 24 November 2006.
