Description Dr. Benson A. Mulemi is a medical anthropologist from Kenya. He also has experience in Political anthropology and Applied anthropology in development studies. Dr. Mulemi has served as a resource person in multidisciplinary applied and academic contexts of the study of African realities. He holds a PhD degree from the Amsterdam institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies [AMIDSt], now Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) in the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences; at the University of Amsterdam. His PhD dissertation is titled "Coping with cancer and adversity: Hospital ethnography in Kenya"( African studies collection volume 22), and can be ordered from the Africa Studies Centre, Leiden. Dr. Mulemi holds Master of Arts degree in (medical) Anthropology from the Institute of Anthropology, Gender &African Studies, University of Nairobi,and Bachelor of Arts honours degree; Anthropology (major) and Kiswahili language (minor), from the school of arts and social sciences, at Moi University, Kenya. His MA thesis is titled: The Bamako initiative and its relevance to malaria control in Bar Chando sub-location, Siaya district, Kenya. He has worked on several projects as a researcher, lecturer and university supervisor at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, and a visiting lecturer at the Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies; University of Nairobi, Institute for Peace Studies and International Relations (Hekima College), Christ the Teacher Institute for Education, Theological Centre for Religious;Tangaza college and the Jesuit School of Theology; Hekima college in Nairobi. Dr. Mulemi also worked as a field and graduate assistant at the Maryknoll Institute of African studies of St. Mary's university of Minnesota, U.S.A&Tangaza college, in Nairobi. His research interests are in Hospital ethnography, culture & health, ethnographies of minority well being and livelihood, social and end of life care among indigenous Africans, African belief systems& thought, and ethnographies of health & health care in Eastern Africa, African culture& conflict,Culture& Development and Ethics of War and peace building. His current research focus on Cancer Narratives in Kenya, and Albinism, Witchcraft, superstitions in East Africa: Exploration of Biocultural exclusion and Livelihood vulnerability (With the first phase of fieldwork in Mwanza, Dar es salaam and Mtwara regions in Tanzania); Ethnography of Cancer Care in Kenya. His publications include articles in Medical Anthropology, Hospital Ethnography; contributions in the Oxford Encyclopaedia of African Thought and African Folklore:an encyclopaedia, Indigenous notions of property and peacebuilding, among others. He was awarded the British Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences visiting scholar grant; tenable at the Centre of African Studies and Wolfson College; University of Cambridge; September- December 2011. | ||
