Nevertheless, they offer striking parallels with American cities, in terms of landscapes or urban planning: planning practices and concepts were even imported to South Africa from the United States. Also, the two countries share a similar historical and cultural background, especially regarding their urban conceptions. But the South African references to America are manifold and refer to different models. The pre-apartheid neighbourhood of Sophiatown was deeply influenced by African-American culture, which helped fostering popular and urban resistance to segregation. Lastly, we show that Sophiatown, though a model in urbanity and an urban reference in the new South Africa, does not inform recent dynamics in post-apartheid cities.
