Abstract
If this project were to be characterized by two keywords, it would be democracy and Islam. Are the two compatible? That is the main question this project focuses on. Our paper is based on secondary sources that contain relevant theories and concepts. These are useful tools in our efforts to examine this debate, which we will apply to the case of Tunisia. First, some historical aspects will be outlined. Second, theoretical debates about the compatibility of Islam and democracy, will be presented. The theoretical framework will depart from the work of various academics who have a great voice in the debate. However, what kind of Islam are they suggesting to be compatible with democracy, and what kind of democracy? Furthermore, there seems to be a long way from theory to praxis. Lastly, it will be analyzed, on the basis of the theoretical chapter, if Tunisia, successfully can function as a democracy. Some suggestions for future research will also be applied. |
