Abstract
Birago Diop's works have as specific objective, to inform and to teach. Consequently, he is mainly concerned with human existence in Africa in general and with the defence of the continent's traditions in particular. The intrusion of the Western culture and civilization in Africa has always clashed with the African traditional life and goes against the fundamentals of African social existence. Diop laments most especially individualism that has become a pervasive factor in the African way of life. The writer advises his young readers most especially to jealously uphold their cultural heritage, a heritage that brings fresh hope to humanity. The main message in Diop's works is to teach about the African traditional beliefs. These beliefs are based on the inter-relationship between all things - animate and inanimate, humans and non-humans. Better known for his literary works than by his professional calling (he trained as a veterinary doctor), Birago Diop was also involved in the Negritude movement, but in his own peculiar way His main concern was with the preservation of the African tradition through the transcription of local folktales and poems for future generations. His aim was then to leave for posterity, through his work, the traditional African world that is better represented and better analyzed than done by foreign anthropologists and sociologists. Birago Diop therefore gives a lot of attention to the animist conception of the African World and worldview. This is the spiritual dimension of his life (i.e. the African life), rhythms and his very existence. Everything in creation participates in human existence. This is the worldview that gives the African a generally more global view of things and people. Man is therefore not this isolated figure the Western world sees: he is part of the entire creation. This is the worldview that will form the background of our analysis of Diop's works in our study. |
