Abstract
THE ADVOCATE A JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY LEGAL ISSUES - Human rights is a highly contested concept, as a result it is susceptible to various interpretations. Although substantial consensus has been attained globally on the list of certain human rights norms, strong disagreements and controversies still thrives over the meaning and the contents of human rights. There is, however, no doubt, that the idea of human rights has a long historical antecedent and has been used through history as both an instrument of resistance by the oppressed and a tool of domination by powerful. Properly employed, human rights have presented a formidable challenge to authoritarian and repressive regimes. This quality of human rights is well known to those in positions of authority, which is why they have usually target human rights for destruction or manipulate it to prop up the existing social order. |
