Abstract
Great Zimbabwe dates from around the 13th Century, and includes ruins of a Temple and an Acropolis, all in impressive stone work. They are believed to have been built originally by Shona people living in this area, and flourished in the 15th Century. Zimbabwe was destroyed and abandoned the the 18th Century in the face of Nguni invasions coming from the south. An American game hunter came across the ruins in 1867. The word, Zimbabwe, means "houses of stone" in the Shona language. |
