Abstract
The observation that about 90% of Eritrean women were circumcised in2002 increased interest to understand the trends, determinants, andconsequences of female genital cutting (FGC). The study used data fromthe 2002 EDHS and the 2003 Female Genital Mutilation Survey toconsider factors that influence the likelihood that women wouldcircumcise their daughter, and attitudes toward this practice. Findingssuggest that although cohort-specific prevalence of genital cutting islower among younger cohorts of women than among older ones, thepractice remains nearly universal, particularly in regions or ethnicgroups where the most severe form (infibulation) is practiced. Women'seducation, urban residence, and household economic status havesignificant negative impact on circumcising a daughter and attitudestoward FGC continuation, suggesting that modernization has influenceon FGC. The findings that education negatively affects attitudes towardFGC suggest that the impact of education could also be through itsinfluence on the social convention. Increased access to higher educationand economic opportunities, and urban residence would help lowersupport for the practice and hence its eradication. Community-basededucational campaigns publicizing the risks of female genital cuttingwould also be helpful. |
