Abstract
The year 1890 saw the publication of a brief Transvaal-Dutch dictionary and a concise Dutch-written grammar of the Transvaal language. It is argued that these anonymous publications were composed in the 1880s by an amateur dialectologist from the peat district in the province of Groningen, Leenardus Huizing (1851-1907), who published under the pseudonym of L. van Ankum. In this article it is pointed out how this Dutch teacher, a prolific author of textbooks, came to the study of Afrikaans. In the 1890s Huizing also contributed to the Afrikaans section of a well-known reference work which was edited by his mentor, the Amsterdam publicist Taco H. de Beer. |
