Title Towards higher education in a post-neoliberal future: A comment on Ethiopia

Abstract Neoliberal thinking has forced its way into education systems worldwide. The question that should be raised is whether after the neoliberal meltdown an educational or intellectual meltdown is to come, or whether the neoliberal economic meltdown offers an opportunity to Ethiopia as well as to other (African) countries to reform their education systems and pay far more attention to their own country&rsquo - s predominantly societal and economic needs as well as to current and future global challenges. It is suggested that in post-neoliberal times the responsibility of higher education as an intellectual as well as integral societal activity should be reconsidered. Focusing the debate on the contents, purposes and objectives of higher education &ndash - with regard firstly to the concept of humankind and secondly to employability and global market demands &ndash - is therefore to be endorsed.
