Abstract
This project investigates, which types of solidaristic and pluralistic argumentation's were present in the response, by the international society - with a focus upon the US and Russia, to the situations, in Libya and Syria. This project will argue that: The aim of the intervention in Libya, was to uphold justice, which supports a solidarist approach. Whereas in the case of Syria, upholding order, which supports a pluralist approach, was the reason behind the handling of the event. In methodological terms this is a comparative case study of Libya and Syria. As part of the case studies a discourse analysis will be executed, upon two speeches by U.S. Foreign Minister Hillary Clinton, as well as one speech by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and one interview, concerning respectively Libya and Syria. The operationalization of the concepts of order and justice are based upon Robert Adcock and David Collier's diagram. The ontological outlook/theory in the project consists on the views expressed by the English school. With the use of Hedley Bull, John Vincent, Robert Jackson and Nicholas J. Wheeler together with the operationalized concepts of order and justice our empirical data will be scrutinized. From our findings we will conclude that our thesis thesis statement is valid. |
