Abstract
This recording opens with a melancholy solo song about being enslaved and forcibly transported to Brazil. It then passes through a praise section in which the chorus joins in, before moving to the more up-beat call-and-response songs that accompany the physical game of capoeira. The track presents the structure of the music that accompanies play and touches on many of the themes central to capoeira. It also situates the group, FICA Bahia, musically and geographically, and demonstrates the spectrum of emotions associated with Capoeira Angola, ranging from longing to celebration. |
