Abstract In 2002, efforts started on formulating a maintenance policy for schools and other social service facilities in Eritrea. Since then, an appropriate policy and related implementation strategies have been further developed. In 2003, a specific pilot project was designed covering a number of schools located in different regions of Eritrea. Management tools and evaluation guidelines were developed and the pilot project was started in 2004. Supervision, monitoring collection of experience was collected by staff of the Ministry of Education. Experiences, findings and recommendations for solidification of a school based approach to school maintenance are presented in the report.
