Abstract
A dissertation submitted to Institute of Psychology in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the award of the degree of Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology of Makerere University - The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between socioeconomic status, depression and domestic violence against rural women in Masaka district. The study was guided by the following objectives: To find out the relationship between socioeconomic status and depression; To establish the relationship between socioeconomic status and domestic violence against rural women; To find out the relationship between depression and domestic violence against rural women; and To establish the contribution of socioeconomic status and depression to domestic violence against rural women. The study used a correlational research design. The sample that participated in the study was 239. Descriptive (means and standard deviations) and inferential statistics (Spearman correlation coefficient and regression) were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed a weak negative relationship between socioeconomic status and depression, a weak negative relationship between socioeconomic status and domestic violence, a moderate positive relationship between depression and domestic violence and a moderate linear relationship between the socioeconomic status, depression and domestic violence. It was concluded that socioeconomic status and depression were related to domestic violence. |
