Abstract
this thesis aims at proposing, in a context of a growing debate on the justifiability of humanitarian intervention and from an English School perspective(s), threshold criteria for humanitarian intervention to be justified. Through the analysis of the pluralists and solidarists movements within the English School, it was possible to come up with a set of four threshold criteria:supreme humanitarian intervention, right authority, last resort, and high probability of success. This was done in order to assess whether the cases of Libya and Syria represent genuine cases for humanitarian intervention. The conclusion from the analyses of the cases showed that in both cases humanitarian intervention is not justified and yet intervention occurred in one country (Libya) and not, yet, in the other (Syria). |
