Abstract
This thesis investigates the influence of the Chambishi Multi-Facility Economic Zone on the presence of the resource curse in Zambia to see whether Chinese investments in Zambia can diminish the negative consequences of dependency on resources. The resource curse is still present in Zambia, as are its two causes: the phenomena of the Dutch disease and rent-seeking. An in-depth analysis of the Multi-Facility Economic Zone proves that the Zone is encouraging the Dutch disease and rent-seeking and does not serve as an antidote to the resource curse in Zambia. The underlying factor that causes the Economic Zone to have these negative effects is the quality of institutions in Zambia. Weak institutions, rather than Chinese investments, are the real cause why Zambia is still affected by the resource curse. This thesis stresses the importance of good governance and the strength of domestic institutions, not only when addressing solutions to the resource curse, but also in International Relations in general. |
