Abstract
Despite the recent scholarly recuperation of decolonisation struggles, Egyptian contributions to the history of Afro-Asian solidarity remain understudied. Instead, many scholars of Gamal Abdel Nasser's Egypt have focused on the Arab regional scale, or downplayed its agency in the Cold War. This article revisits the 1957 Afro-Asian Peoples' Solidarity Conference, and its related institutions in Cairo, the African Association and Afro-Asian People's Solidarity Organisation. It examines how they functioned as channels of solidarity, and their impact on activists' identities and political commitments. Using Arabic primary sources, it argues that in this period, Cairo came to act as a unique spatial conduit for Arab, African, and Afro-Asian connections of different kinds. This emerged from the interplay between state policy and the activities of engaged intellectuals, writers, and artists. Egypt's case thus offers valuable insights into the nature of popular solidarity networks, and the porousness of state-society boundaries, in contexts of decolonisation. |
