Abstract
Contains fulltext : 298375.pdf (Publisher's version ) (Open Access) - This thesis explores local financing mechanisms to reduce the negative impact of rice cultivation on malaria exposure in southeastern Rwanda. A pilot with larval source management in rice paddies serves to investigate the scale of financial resource mobilization that actors in the local rice value chain could achieve. Using a variety of bidding game techniques, the study addresses questions such as: are rice farmers willing to support a biological larviciding campaign through cost-sharing within their cooperative? Does their degree of ownership over the campaign matter for contribution levels? And do local rice consumers take co-responsibility by accepting a price premium for malaria-free rice? The answers to these questions offer broader policy lessons for other resource-poor settings where agricultural livelihoods and public health are in conflict. - Radboud University, 12 december 2023 - Promotor: Koch, D.J.
