Abstract
Contains fulltext : 305396.pdf (Publisher's version ) (Open Access) - In my dissertation, I analyse how nonreligious views are being normalised in Morocco and the Moroccan diaspora through subtle forms of everyday activism. Handling a qualitative, intersectional, and comparative approach, the data draws from intermittent hybrid fieldwork conducted between 2019 and 2023 in Morocco and Western Europe. By looking at the narratives of young, urban, educated, and middle-upper-class nonbelievers, it becomes clear that whereas nonreligious views have become more widespread, the majority of former Muslims are not eager to share their views publicly. While classical forms of activism are rare, my research shows that many nonbelievers do try to find alternative ways to normalise the topic. In everyday online and offline spaces, they embody their ideas by embracing a 'liberal lifestyle', engage in debates on social media, and break the taboo by phrasing their messages as jokes. On a small scale, they negotiate more liberties within their families and circumvent dress and eating codes in creative ways. In five chapters, my dissertation zooms in on different forms of everyday activism that contribute to an increased acceptance of being nonreligious in and outside Morocco. By doing so, a different picture emerges: activism is not lacking; it just takes different forms. - Radboud University, 08 mei 2024 - Promotor: Nieuwkerk, C. van Co-promotor: Gónzalez Vázquez, A.
